I went for a ride today with some camera equipment and a deadline to be back home for dinner with the wife and kids. WIth my trusty 24-105, tripod, 580EX and 16ft sync cable, I tried to set up and take a shot in the woods. I used the timer (10 seconds). I strapped the flash to a tree with an old toe strap and tried to guess at the exposure after a couple of test shots for the ambient light. The sun is behind and above my right shoulder - it was about 5:30 PM. The flash is camera left about 45 degrees. I forgot my lumiquest mini soft box. I gave myself 10 minutes to set-up and take this shot.
I think I may have overdone it slightly (!) on the flash power. With the soft box and a little less power on the flash I think I might get a little more decent shadow. If I could get the flash closer to the subject That would probably help as well - maybe an el cheapo collapsible tripod. The ambient light was in an out of hazy clouds the whole time. The deer, I think, were laughing at me while I hit the shutter release, ran to the bike, hopped on and pretended like I was riding singletrack.
C+C and off-camera flash comments always welcome. Thanks!
Kirk
