Hi all,

Just a quick question... is it possible to avoid the 1/60 shutter speed sync when using P-mode and a Flash? i.e. the camera operates in the same fashion when not using a flash... I'm guessing if I stuck the flash in to Manual then this would work? However would the camera then meter the flash during exposure and compensate as a result? (not desirable)

I don't have my camera stuff to hand at the moment to try this thought

Thanks!

In P mode you're telling the camera that you don't care about either shutter speed or aperture. So the camera picks what it likes, which (except in bright light) is to use 1/60 shutter speed and maximum aperture to try to help capture some of the background (maximum aperture also gives maximum flash range).

If you want something different, you can use Tv mode (in which case the camera will still set the aperture wide open), Av mode (in which case the camera will let the shutter go really slow to capture everything under ambient light, using the flash as fill flash), or M mode.

When you care about both shutter speed and aperture, that's what we call "manual exposure", or M mode. :D

Shoot in either Av, Tv or M mode.

No, no and yes.

If you use Av or Tv mode with flash the camera will assume the flash is for fill only and it will meter for ambient. Only do this if you agree that the flash is fill.

If the flash isn't fill or you otherwise want to control the shot then use M. If you do not want ETTL to adjust the flash power according to the FEC you have input then set the flash to manual power too.

I shoot in Manual for most my work... however due to the chaotic lighting for the more 'natural' looking pics it's better to shoot in P-mode to get a more reliable exposure (nightclub photography you see), then I was thinking about applying a flash to freeze certain areas... usually DJ shots really.

Thanks for the help

You're absolutely right. Totally slipped my mind. Thanks, Jeff for straightening me out on that.
