Do you mean the 1D2 crop or the 1DS2 ( full frame ) ?

He has a 1DII so probably he means the 1.3x crop...

Yes, 1D2. Why did you guys decide to go with the 1Ds versus 1D mark ii?

Why did you get a 5D instead of a 40D?

....oh....duh ! ...yeah, you're right Harry, I didn't look at his gear list.

Well professor....I have both, and in a real general sense, I consider my 1D2 bodies to be my "everyday, all purpose" cameras. I think of my 1DS full frame as my "fine arts" camera. I use it mostly in the studio or when shooting outdoors when I really want a very nice image, like say, a landscape shot. It ( the full frame ) spends a fair bit of time on the tripod. Compared to a 1D2, the FF is not as well suited to sports and action, because at 3.5 FPS it just can't keep up with a 1D2. We could probably argue that that the 1D2 is better at high ISO also. The 1D2 goes to 1600, or 3200 in extended, the FF only goes to 1250. At higher ISO on the FF you have to be really careful not to underexpose, because the noise gets rather ugly.

To my eye, the 1DS has a little more of a "film like" quality to it's images. You may or may not like that, depending on your point of view. I think it looks cool, especially blue sky. Not sure if you can see it in these shots as posted here, but try to see the "grain" in the sky. This is typical of this FF, especially at ISO400.

The 1DS also eats up the battery a little faster, especially in cold weather, and overall, is just a "slower, more leisurely" camera. I love it...and will keep it until it dies because I like the images and besides, it's not worth much on the used market. Which...if you are buying, makes it a screaming bargain.

...just for kicks....here's a couple more from the FF. Some folks argue the color is a little more vibrant straight out of the FF compared to the crop. Probably true, however, it's been my experience that I can make that up in post, with the images from the cropper....so that may not be much of an advantage.

For the full frame magic. I had a 5D once, and boy, I was in love, but I couldnt afford to keep it, so now I am going to it. I LOVE the image quality of the 5D.

Thanks for the info george m w. I just wasnt sure how they compared. I do not think I will get one since I have the 5D, but it is probably the full frame magic at work with the 1Ds, similar to the 5D.

Yeah George, I wouldn't argue that but it is true that the 1Ds has more color pop than the 1D MKII. And yes, the difference can be made up in post. I also use my bodies as you do, and love them both for their prospective roles. Great bodies, indeed.
