Hi all - some questions I can't find the answers to. Any help greatly appreciated:

1. There is a hash sign on the top display next to the metering mode. I don't have the user guide for the camera but apparently it means PF - this must be personal functions - but what does the hash mean? Does it just mean that you have some in operation?

2. I'm getting RAW file sizes of about 10 megabytes. Is that right? I read a page the other day that said the 1ds had 31megabyte raw files. I would've just assumed it was a mistake, but the first shots I took with this camera were exactly that size. So now I'm doubting myself...

3. What is your favourite custom function/personal function?

Thanks in advance..!

1ds...50mm f1.8...85mm f1.8...135mm f2 plus several flashes and bits of kit!

Yes, I think hash means that some personal functions are ON

1ds raw is about 10mb.
31 is big mistake :)

You can download the manual in pdf format from the canon usa site. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll email a copy of it to you if need be.
Edit: kohr beat me to it....

OK, time for some fun... :)
Photo below is probably highest 1ds iso you will ever see :)

This equiv. of ISO 12,800 or even more (yes!)
Original photo was taken at ISO 800 (as a jpg, no raw!). It was very dark (flash didn't flash ;)
so I had to push it 4-5 stops :)))

1ds at 12,800

Does anyone can beat this?

Yes....that's a pretty darn good way to describe it !

Is it a shot that is noise-free and totally sharp with superb dynamic range ? Well ..... no.
But is it a photo, that the folks, or their friends/relatives in the shot will look at in the years to come and smile and talk about that celebration ? Well....yes it is....so I say, job well done ! Sometimes these kinds of photos can end up being among the most meaningful in the long run. And they are the kind of shots that exist, because you took the chance to "break the rules and shoot when the meter said you can't, and dealt with it as best you could in post process".

Just got back from Safari in Zambia and really impressed with the robustness of this camera. First night drive, we got stuck in sand and we all had to jump out of the Land Rover. As the Land Rover was released, my 1DS, 2x converter and 300mm L f/2.8 IS combo rolled off the seat onto the floor with a Bang! I couldn't see any damage and it appeared to work fine. I had no laptop or way of viewing the photos in Zambia so only just had a chance to look at them.

Here is one taken two days later, early in the morning with the above combo at ISO 800... All I can say is thankfully this is a very solid camera!!
