Ok kids here is the deal. About 4 years ago I bought a a 1ds Classic, along with a 1d Classic. Both bodies LNIB. Each had 2261 and 932 clicks respectively. After checking them out I promptly popped them into a pelican case for storage and basically forgot them, electing to shoot with my then shiney new 1Ds Mark III and 1D Mark III.

Last week I broke out the 1D Classic and shot my daughter's swimming meet. Amazing old school stuff. Still have to figure out the AI Servo which seems to be different then the 1D Mk III, at least to me. One thing is for sure with this classic Is that you have to get the shot, there ain't much room for cropping with that tiny megapixel image. But, wow what colors. An example is in the 1D classic thread at the end. It's the kid with braces taking a breath.

So, Having so much fun with the 1D I figured its time to bust out the 1Ds. I am going to shoot my daughter's Christmas portrait with it along with my really old school EF 50 f/1.0 L (yes i do have one) and my trusty EF 85 f/1.2 L II.

Most definately will post results when I get them done. The only down side in my mind with using the 1Ds Classic is adding clicks.

Looking forward to seeing them. I have been seeing the 1DS going for under $600 online and may actually have to pick one up for that low a price. It would be a nice addition to my $499 5D.

You have proven what all others doubt. I get amazed when someone says I don't go over ISO 400 on the 1DS. I often shoot ISO 800-1000 and let me tell you, the grain is absolutely super fine, unlike the blotchy pattern of modern cameras. It cleans up superbly in PS. I love the 1DS.

I've followed this thread for awhile now and am surprised of the low number of posts by users of this camera. This camera is over 10 years old and as of right now only 1431 posts including this one? Is it because there wasn't many made in the production cycle or nobody cares to shoot and share with it?

I think the camera was already quite old when this thread was started, and a lot of the "professional users" had probably upgraded by then. The Mk III had already been around for almost a year before this thread was started (at least since it was announced).

I don't know how many they made, but I'm sure that there aren't that many in active use, at least in the POTN community.

My guess is Canon did not sell a lot of the 1DS bodies. A lot of pros were using the 1D at the time, and the 1DS was $7900 when it was released. Pretty pricey, and then not long after the 1DS came out, they introduced the 1DMk2 ( 1.3 crop sensor ), which had improved battery life, and much faster FPS. Many pros went for the 1D2, so they essentially skipped right over the 1DS. The 1DMk2 was only $4800 also, so since it undercut our full frame 1DS by so much, it grabbed the lions share of the market.
I have three 1D2 bodies....they are a workhorse, but I still love the files out of the 1DS ! Especially in the studio at ISO100. Great old camera, even in 2013 !

"Professional user?" I think most users on most forums are non-pros. Most of them just want the latest and can either afford it or will break the bank to get something newer.

Indeed most of us are no professionals but hobby and wanted to get a little more out of it. And yes its a oldie but still it suprises me with the quality.
In these modern days the standard consumer will buy a dslr and leave the settings to auto (boring), think there are less peolple who knows how to use the manual settings and when they see a 1Ds they would think: thats above my knowledge ;)

Nice to see there is still some life in the old 1Ds, every now and then I still take mine out for a shoot, it is in pristine condition with a low shutter count and still produces amazing images.

There was a time when it was THE digital camera for landscape photographers and many amazing and award winning images were created with it.

Here are a few macro images produced in my garden using the 1Ds and Sigma 150mm EX f2.8 macro.

Rudy those are some very nice images, was that with the 1DS or DII? Anyways I have a question for all of you who have multiple bodies. Last year the 1D bug hit me and as I saw deals too good to pass up I ended up with THREE 1D II bodies, 1 DS body along with TWO Fuji S3 bodies. I'm not a professional by any means and have never been paid for taking a picture, strictly an amateur hobbyist and use one camera once or twice a week. My question is would leaving a camera unused for long periods of time actually cause it to malfunction or break sooner than it's rated shutter life? What are your opinions of that? I'm applying the analogy of leaving a car parked in the garage for years on end would not be good unless you drove it every once in a while. The problem with me is I have more than I can use and I'm not a volume shooter. Even when I take pictures it's maybe 50-100 per shoot.

I still love my 1Ds. It's my primary SLR... it's paid for itself at least three times over now too!

Thanks! These were all taken with the 1Ds,

I have quite a few bodies and often some of them are not used for months. I have never had a problem. Over the last 10 years I had one problem with a camera, a new 20D where the shutter release button became intermittent, it was quickly sorted out by Canon.
