Thanks Thorrulz, I love the wee fifty - I keep making plans to buy a 1.4 purely because of the metal lens-mount, but the quality of this wee lens is incredible (especially for the price). My 1Ds only gets occasional use at work nowadays (I use a pair of 7D's for weddings and events) but for portraits I absolutely LOVE it! Couple it with good glass and it's unbeatable, IMO.
These shots were taken with the 1Ds and 70-200 f4L (non-IS) for a client who runs a hair & beauty salon and some of the shots have been blown up to A0 size by them and look great (tbh, I didn't expect them to cope with such a big enlargement and told him that, but I was really surprised - not to mention impressed)

Those are really good portraits KSG. I sold my 7D and picked up a 5D since I don't really shoot moving subjects much nowadays. I've always liked the 1D bodies and their AF ability so I'll most likely pick one of these up next time money permits.

I have recently acquired an itch to sell my T2i (550D) and get a 1Ds mark I. I mostly shoot my own kids, so the AF would be a huge upgrade and FF would be great. I don't shoot much video and don't need huge prints.

I do enjoy off-camera ETTL. I understand the 1Ds mk II has ETTL-II while the mark I does not. Would I miss it or even notice the difference? Additionally Dxomark has the mark II rated much higher. Should I wait and save up for the mark II?

What are your opinions on these matters? Thank you for your consideration.

I am seeking some advice on my camera's shutter. There are six pics, each with faster shutter speed, (1/800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 2000, and 2500), all with equivalent exposure. I am assuming this is a shutter issue; is that correct? If so, is this indicative of impending shutter failure?

This is a newly purchased, used Canon 1Ds of unknown pedigree. Shutter count is just under 68k. From what I've read, shutter replacement would cost about what I paid for the body. It is still under the grace period from the seller. When shooting at 1/800th or slower, I am very pleased with this camera.

Any thoughts?

I got it for $380 shipped. I fell in love with it over the weekend and am sad to have to send it back.

Yeah it definitely looks like a shutter issue to me. Did you get this on ebay? It's a shame because this camera can take some wonderful pictures as you've shown in your posted portrait. I hope you don't give up on this model. I bought mine for $550 from a local camera store and they included a 2 year warranty on that. Try that route if you can.

Shutter is dying for sure. $380 is a fair deal with a dead shutter. Lol, I paid almost $1000 for mine at the end of 2009.

I paid $700ish for mine last year from KEH. The shutter died within the 6mo. warranty and they fixed it.

Excellent questions. Glad to see you considering one of these fine cameras, but since this is a picture thread, I'll try to be brief to keep it from drifting too far off topic. The 1Ds is still a great camera, depending on what you expect to get out of it. I've had mine for years and will never sell it. I still like it that much. I do think you'll like the AF quite well in the 1Ds. As for full frame, in my opinion, it can't be beat. I can't comment too much on the ETTL, as that's a personal preference depending on what you want to do. One reason why you might look at a MkII above all other reasons is that you can expect a little more life out of it.

Oh, and forget DxO. That's fine for bragging rights, but the best determinant is to look at actual images and see if you like the camera's performance. This thread is full of great shots that pretty much speak for themselves. Do a little checking on the forum and see if the difference in IQ makes enough difference to you to justify the MkII. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to shoot me a pm.

Hey there is definitely a post by someone about drivers and software. I'll look into it. I have a Lenovo T61 with XP Pro and I have no problems connecting my 1DS with the laptop.

Make sure you have the latest WIA driver installed. It's available on Canon's site.

Hey all, I'm looking into one of these and was wondering if there were any specifics I need to watch out for on this specific model...
Current owner does not have a lot of history on it, but told me they are Nikon user and only used about a 1000 clicks on it, had it over 5 years now.
Has some wear on the corners that looks normal for the age and there is a crack in the plastic screen for the top LCD, screen appears to work fine.

I'm hoping to try it out in the next few days.
Seller is asking $400.
(after reading above I will make sure to take some high and low speed shutter images)
