I want to take a small portable hard drive to use with my laptop for an upcoming trip. I'm looking at least 250GB, but most importantly, RELIABILITY!!
So, which is the most reliable of them all.... WD Passport, SimpleTech, Seagate, Maxtor.....?

May 04, 2008 10:53 | #5 My dilemma is that, while I'm leaning towards Seagate, they only make the portable HD up to 250gb and it is not on sale right now. WD Passport Essential 320gb, however, is on sale this weekend for $129.99. But then I've heard more complaints with WD than Seagate.... When it comes to such electronics, I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette....

IMO it's just best to stick with name brands, Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate. They're all within the same range of reliability. Some cameras, some lenses, plenty of gaffer's tape and beer.

I prefer WD myself in terms of reliability and average write speeds and such, but Seagates tend to run a tad cooler and quieter.

I haven't had much luck with WD's but Seagate did buy out WD or was it the other way around. Nevertheless, when you make your purchase, make sure it's the Seagate and not the WD. There are people who had great luck with WD but I'm seagate! Canon EOS 40D | EOS Rebel XTI/400D | G9
