Portable HD: WD vs. SimpleTech vs. Seagate vs....

I would go for Seagate, I have just had my 3rd external WD drive fall over on me in 3 years and would not recommend them to anyone!

Thank you, folks. I like the Seagate's 5 year warranty as opposed to WD's 3 year. Since my trip overseas isn't going to be until end of this month, I'll wait and see if there's any bargain pricing on Seagate for their 250gb. If not, I'll just get the WD which seems to be on sale just about every weekend.

The Office Depot in my area has that one on sale for $129.99, and that's the one I'm tempted to get. 320gb should be plenty for a month of traveling and shooting RAW images and HD videotaping....

Okay, the price was too good, so I got a 320gb WD "Passport Essential" for $104 today. Since I have a 30 day store return policy, I'll use and test it until my overseas travel on May 30. Thank you for all your input!

I went to a local Best Buy and simply asked them to price-match the best price of their competitors, and that's what they came up with after searching on the computer for awhile.

I got the WD a few years ago. Just opened up the case and inserted a newer larger drive. So happy with it.

Office Depot here has 250gb WD Passports for $90 and 160gb for $60 right now.

I had a WD internal drive fail on me (not completely, but it started acting up) and talked to a data recovery guy who has been in the business for years. He said out of all the hard drives that come in he sees the fewest Seagates. I only use Seagate now. I do have a 500GB Maxtor external that I got at for a killer price on Black Friday but it's basically a Seagate.

Let me disappoint your seagate lovers, this is based on what i seen in the pass and experience with it

all my SCSI Barracuda and Cheetah are excellent
IDE all barracuda are very good up to date
SATA, 320GB i seen more problem here and there, their ES and ES2 are very well built

the 2.5 inch notebook drives are poorly made, you can talk to people who recover data by the platter
WD and Hitachi are better made
my 100GB Seagate portable drive failed on me after 1 year, no more warranty
i called Seagate up, and they told me nothing they can do, just click click click

it is an USB portable drive, the usb circuitry is very very poor engineered, corrupted data transfer, i called support, they told me it is my computer problem, 5 of my computers, 6 of my laptops all have problem
from IBM, HP, Dell clone all have problem ?

how come i have absolutely no problem with 3 of my SmartDisk 80GB USB drives, none, 2 of my WD passport now are excellent, i will not buy a 2.5 Seagate again

My dilemma is that, while I'm leaning towards Seagate, they only make the portable HD up to 250gb and it is not on sale right now. WD Passport Essential 320gb, however, is on sale this weekend for $129.99. But then I've heard more complaints with WD than Seagate.... When it comes to such electronics, I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette....

so what are you looking to save....$30-$40? you want reliabilty or lunch money ?
