OK I have around $1000 to spend on a lens. Right now I only have a 50 1.8 so I need a general purpose lens to shoot portraits and street stuff.

My narrowed list includes

1.24-70 2.8
2.24-105 4is
3.70-200 2.8
4.70-200 4is

I am really leaning toward the 70-200 4is having owned a 70-200 f4 and a sigma 70-200 2.8 in the past I like the range but I will give up any wide perspective.

Who shoots a 70-200 f4is on a MarkIII? How would you say this combo compares to the 2.8?

What do you shoot mostly? Some love the 70-200s as an all around lens, others want something wider like the 24-105 or 24-70.

Amazing you have a MkIII and only an $80 lens! :p

I would say either the 24-70 or the 24-105. I chose the 24-105 because it is my "general purpose" lens and thought that having the 3-stop IS would be a good thing.

I am very happy with mine.

Door #1. It is the equal FOV of 30-90mm on FF, and that is a very usefull range.

I know... I just sold my 70-200 f4 and 17-40 to help fund the MarkIII. Now I am ready to start building my collection back up.

I am the worst about buying and selling gear. I have had $3-4000 worth of lenses at one time or another but I see something else I want and sell it to buy them. This time i'm going to build for the future so I will probably keep whatever I buy. Thats why I think the 24-70 suits my needs now because if I get the 70-200 f4is I will always be looking at the 2.8is.

I even tossed around the idea of getting a 50 1.2 but I need a little more versatility.

I would vote 1 or 2. Probably 2 for versatility.

But in your case... I'd say 3 or 4 given you have used that before and are comfortable. The F4 IS is nice and compact. You will likely always look at the 2.8 IS regardless. So get the F4 IS, and see if it suits your needs for a while. If it really doesn't, it's an excuse to upgrade :)

Besides, it's not like the canon F4 IS won't hold it's value.
