hey guys,

i am directing this question to owners of the 50 1.2L only since i know that this lens is a bit controversial so i want to make sure that only people that actually used/own this lens reply.

to cut to the chance, i am considering selling my 24-70L and replacing it with the 50L. i already own the 17-40 which i LOVE and the 85 1.8 which i love as well. what i need is a FAST low light lens that i can use and i find the 85 to be a bit too long which eliminates the 85 1.2L.

don't get me wrong, i love the 24-70 and get great results with it but i find it to be too cumbersome in some cases and not fast enough in others.

so.... i would like to hear the thoughts of people in the same situation.

btw, before anybody mentions the 50 1.4, i have owned that lens 3 times now and to be honest, i don't like it. i like the FL but i don't like the IQ or AF.

I find that since I own the 85L, 24L, and 50L (acquired in that order) I use these lenses almost exclusively. I also find that the 50L is rapidly becoming my most used lens. That is on a 40D.

Do note that you should either get a recently calibrated specimen, or one with a UV09 date code or newer, if you want to make sure it focuses correctly (no focus shift) at all apertures and focusing distances. See some of the other 50L threads here :).

BTW, I share your feelings about the 50 F/1.4 :).

BTW2: I just realize that I actually try to find excuses to use those lenses exclusively. I just love their IQ, contrast, sharpness and bokeh. And zero to almost no PP required, except for white balance - but that is caused by the camera, not the lenses (flashless shooting with weird coloured lights or very low K tunsten lighting :)).

Kind regards, Wim

i have this lens and use this lens on frequently basic. I can sum it up as: Fast, Excellent for low light condition IF AND ONLY IF you get your hand on a good copy. You can also send it in along with the Mark III for microajustment.

GO for it Snir.

thanks for the great feedback so far guys.

Wim- are you sure about that UV09 and above lenses?

Personally, I am, based on my own tests (5 copies, of which 3 prior to UV07, early last year, and two newer ones, UV07 and UV09, and comments from other people, four I know in my area who own 50Ls, and several comments from people here on POTN.

It was reported by one person that the focus shift may still exist, in the f/1.4-F/2.8 area at distances between 45 cm and ~1.2 or ~1.5 m, but apparently so small now as always to fall within DoF. Personally I found no proof of this. My own specimen (I kept the UV09 one) just works right, every time, every aperture, every distance, completely repeatable. The only variation I see is normal AF variation - all within focus however. Maybe not entirely normal, as it seems 99.9% repeatable on a tripod, with MLU and remote control. Since I also got a Katz Eye prism wedge focusing screen for the 40D, I did test the MF focus ability too: similar results so far, just very much slower :). Note that my MF results show more spread than the AF results - that's good AF performance :).

BTW, people who had their 50L calibrated and work correctly under all circumstances, report "electronic adjustments" were made, so I reckon something was done to the firmware of the lens to correct the problem.

With my particular specimen I found that AF hits right at the edge of DoF nearby, all the time, when doing focus tests, so seemingly slightly backfocusing all the time. This I found irritating at first, becaus eof th eidea of it, but in real life shooting I have really started to appreciate it; it looks to me now that that is how it should work with such a fast lens, especially considering the real size of the sensors. In real life it just gets it right all the time, provided of course I get things right myself in the first place - there will always be user error with such a fast lens used at very large apertures, especially with long shutter speeds, although I did manage a few sharp shots at 0.3" :).

The bokeh is out of this world as well. And it is sharp. Only at F/1.2 it is not excellent, just very, very good, which of course may be caused by the very shallow DoF. And from F/1.4 it is sharper than any other 50 mm lens I have tested personally so far (4 50 F/1.4s, 1 50 F/1.8 Mk I and 4 Mk IIs, 1 50 CM, 1 Contax Zeiss Planar T* 50 F/1.4). I may test it against a Zuiko 50 F/1.4 as well, as soon as I get an adapter for it :). I think I do know the outcome :D.

It does have some longitudinal CAs (the green and dark red at high contrast transitions in OOF areas) at very large apertures, just like the 85L, but a little less so. I did not manage to get it to flare, not even shooting with the (setting) sun in the frame in a high contrast environment, or lose contrast in difficult lighting situations. I haven't noticed any lateral CA so far, nor PF, but I used it mostly indoors so far, which may hide this. OTOH, the 85 F/1.8 showed PF both outdoors and indoors under the right circumstances, and I haven't seen any yet with my 50L. All in all, IMO, a very, very impressive piece of optics. As impressive as the 85L, just smaller and lighter :).

I'll see if I can find a few pics that I can share, but since I am on the road again, that'll may take a few days if you don't mind.

Kind regards, Wim

Ah, you see, that is where we are different :). I use (relatively) slow zooms, aided by fast primes :). I wouldn't like to miss my 24-105 :).

If you are afraid to miss the 24-70, you probably will. Maybe save a little longer? These lenses have different uses anyway.

OTOH, 24L-50L-85L, great combination. :)

Kind regards, Wim

So, far, I have kept both.

But, here's where I'm heading:
- 24-35MM fast prime inbound
- 24-105 coming also
- 24-70 will be sold

The reason is that by the time I'm looking for one more stop, I really desire f/1.x

I'm happy with mine. It's really sharp. The focus seems fine, although I'm starting to wonder if it has more random misfocuses than the 85L. At any rate it's a great lens, and I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon.

Been using the many fabled EF 50 1.2L on my 5D for a couple weeks now. It's a UV09... Seems to focus accurately at both near and far distances. However it "misses" focus maybe once or twice every 20 frames or so. I can go hundreds of frames with my other L zooms and primes without missed focus, so it's a little surprising. I figured probably a consequence of the razor thin DOF. It typically happens if I repeatedly shoot the same target with focus refreshes. It usually nails AF the first time, so I merely have to learn to not refresh and keep AF locked.

Have you considered waiting for the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX HSM? It was just announced last month.

There've been a lot of progress in optics since the EF 50 f/1.4 USM was designed 15 years ago. I'm sure the new Sigma will be a great deal better. The MSRP for the Sigma 50 f1.4 is the same as that of the Sigma 30 f1.4... which puts its street price in the neighborhood of ~$450 USD.

At that price, you can keep you 24-70L instead of selling it.
