I’ve followed various discussions about external flash(es) and diffusing techniques/devices, but have not seen mention of moving the external flash off the G6 camera via a cord or a bracket. Any thoughts on this vs. the above methods?

Thanks,
Jim

I would assume the Off Camera Shoe Cord would work with the Canon Speedlites, retaining full E-TTL operation with the G6. I might get the 420EX as my next accessory.

I recently priced this cord locally at about $40.00 - going to try and find it cheaper on the net. The guy at my local store mentioned that you would have a fully functioning strobe even with the cord attached - it simply puts the strobe in your hand rather than on the camera - that can only be good for your pics from my perspective..........

According to the 420 manual, you can use both a cord and the remote transmitter (either the dedicated master or the 550/580, which can act as a master). The transmitter is about $200 at B&H - a bit more than the cord, but you can control multiple flashes from it. Though I don't know all the details, it looks like for more than two, they're slaved in "groups", and each group has to have a master, which has to be a 550/580. So by the time you link up three or more of these, you're looking at close to $1000 - at which point it might be worth looking at a dedicated studio light setup (which I haven't, so maybe its more than I think to get started down that road).

Thanks for input. I have a 420 and I'm sure it will work with cord or wireless flash, but I was really looking for suggestions for taking pictures with the external flash removed from just above the lens and/or diffused with devices I've seen discussed here.
I know from studio lighting experiences that angled and diffused light sources make for good pictures, but I'm looking for suggestions to use the flash in that way.
Jim
