Can I somehow put a UV filer on my A570 IS?

Hi everybody,

I have recently bought a A570 IS PowerShot and I *love* it. The one thing which I wish I could do with it (besides having an external flash) would be to somehow mount a UV filter on it.

Is there any way to do this with my camera?

Well, a UV filter really only helps protect the lens. When the camera's turned off, the lens is covered anyhow. You can get a lens adapter, either from Canon (LA-DC52G; which also fits the A590) or from a third party such as Lensmate Online. They are threaded for standard filters and you can mount a UV (or polarizer) to them.

That's pretty much what it is. The bezel around the 570's lens can be removed and the adapter mount put in its place. You can then add filters or auxiliary close-up, telephoto adapter or wide angle adapter lenses to it. I know nothing about Bower's products. Lensmate is well spoken of.

I am still confused about one thing though: just adding an adapter does nothing in itself, right? I need to purchase an adapter AND then a telephoto, or macro, of filter, etc. Correct?

Right - the adapter just gives you an attachment point. Without it, you can't use any other things, but without them all it does is stick out around your lens.

Quite right, it does block the optical viewfinder. esp. with the rubber lens hood attached. The flash is blocked about 30%, I have no experience with it though, as I don't normally take flash pics.

One thing I did notice, was the extra size makes it harder to carry conveniently.

The LA-DC52G allows you to mount both 52mm filters as well as the adapter lenses. I have the Canon WC-DC52 wide angle converter that gives a 0.7 magnification - nice to have that extra field of view sometimes. I had bought that adapter lens for my old A75 which used a different lens adapter than the A570, but the adapter is only about $19.95 (at Adorama).

While Jon seems to poo-poo the poor old UV filters, they really do help reduce haze in images, not just acting as a lens protector (though I'm sure many UV filters have given their lives in that service....). I also have a 52-58mm up-converter that allows me to use all those 58mm filters that I have for my 20D's lenses.
