Here are some more Cardinal shots. They are one of my favorite birds. The shots of the bird on the feeder are through a window, so they are not as sharp as they could be.

All shots were taken using the 100-400 f/4.-5.6L IS lens. Some had the 1.4x teleconverter also.

Male and Female together in the trees:

I think this is my favorite:

I haven't completely mastered the art of posting photos in the forum yet. I'll get it eventually! :)

They are mostly uncropped photos. That is why I had to shoot through the glass - we put up a feeder on our deck. A pair have made it their own. But if there is any movement that they notice they fly back to the trees.

A few times we have been lucky enough to get the camera (always setup and nearby) without them flying away. With the 100-400 + 1.4x I have to manual focus, but it does a great job of isolating the background from this close.

I'm hoping to setup down in the trees this spring and just sit quietly for a while, in the hopes I can get more photos with them in the trees.

why dont you sit close by where they usually fly away to (the trees) in some brush with your tripod- and have someone walk out on the deck while theyre feeding...then theyll be distracted by that fly back and probably not even notice you in hiding?

Great images. I think the first would be better if it were cropped tighter. The last one is my favorite of the bunch as well.

Critique and advice are always appreciated, even when it's brutally honest.

Thanks for the comments. I love this time of year - there are huge numbers of birds around, and everything is green!
