Advice on using monopod?

So, I've been trying to shoot more and more lately to get better, but lets just say using a monopod hasn't helped as much as I thought it would. I'm thinking there are some tips around that might help me hone my skills.

My rig is currently a Bogen 680B w/ tilt head and quick release, gripped 400d and 70-200 f4L non IS. I recently ordered a knock off tripod collar for the 70-200 thinking that'll help with the lens wobble but I could still use some tips. Anybody have some?

It would help if you could post some examples. The 70-200 f4 is relatively lightweight and I usually don't use mine with a pod. It is not going to give you the stability of a tripod, but you should be able to get 1 or 2 stops with one.

I will try to press down on my monopod or onto something like a fence or my leg, foot instep.

Make yourself into a tripod shape with it and your legs, press into the ground and squeeze the shutter. Sitting and using my leg to press into with the pole works. I suppose pressing give my shake a direction to go without allowing movement.

i used a monopod along with a small ballhead a few days ago
i sat the whole event on the ground
monopod on floor..with foot in front of it to keep it from sliding forward
then i just let the camera lay flat on my face as i pressed the shutter gently
good results!
