I like the expression - tons of personality. Froth and bubbles are amusing - should embarass him a touch one day ;-)a. Focal depth is very well chosen... face is very nicely focused with just a suggestion of softness fore and aft. Slight angle of his body to the shot stops it looking too mechanical. Good exposure too, though the lighting itself is a bit flat. One thing that can really lift sucha shot is to get a little more eye surface in, as the eyes can be very expressive and are the natural point of focus for the viewer. All up, I think you've done well. If you can shoot a collection of shots of this quality, I'm sure some favourites will emerge over time based on how representative they are of his personality, chance to get him doing something a bit extra etc.. Cheers, Tony

First of all. Congratulations!

Try different angles and distances.

What I did when my daughter was this age.

Lay a nice blanket flat on the floor.
Dress baby in a nice outfit and lay baby on back facing up.
Stand directly over the child and point camera straight down in vertical/portrait. (shoot head to toe)
Crop so that the blankets edge and carpet/floor isn't visible.
Use available light from a nearby window if you can get even lighting.
Try to avoid using a flash.

Good luck!

Just Be,

This is what I needed to read. It's tricky as heck trying to get good face shots. Thanks.

Anytime. Take your time and have fun. You'll find it can be difficult but very rewarding. You'll get lucky too and wonder why.

Eventually you could get an inexpensive lighting setup. I did and took all of my daughters professional portraits and still do. So much better than school pics.
