I had a friend helping me out with a wedding this weekend and she took a few shots as well. She's using a 40D, and when I had borrowed her camera a couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the images to my computer fine. But the images she shot this weekend aren't showing up properly - I've downlaoded them using EOS Utility, and as they're importing they show up in the preview window, but now in Adobe Bridge (CS3) the files just show up as X's. I can view them in Pixort, but not Bridge or DPP.

I don't think the files are corrupt in any way since I was able to see them as they imported and in Pixort, but I can't figure out why I can't see them in Bridge. Any ideas?

Hi Dawn, the first thing that comes to mind is updating your software. Use the UPDATE process in CS3. It sounds like you were looking at jpeg images when you borrowed the camera earlier but the newer images are RAW files.

You should also make sure the 40D has the latest firmware version as well. I believe the latest is vers. 1.05. I had a similar problem with RAW files from my 40D when using DXO. Updating the firmware resolved the issue.

Hope this helps...........

To view 40D Raw files you need to have Adobe Camera Raw 4.2 or later. The current version is 4.4.1 so ideally that's the version that you should update to....Support for the 40D was added in ACR 4.2 but that version can't read SRAW files so the later versions are significantly better.

Otherwise try purging your folder cache and see if that clears up the problem.

The newest raw version is 4.4 I believe...update your raw plugin and you will be all set.

Thanks everyone - I updated ACR and then was able to see the files in Bridge, but not open them (???). Updated Bridge and now everything's working fine.

Recheck that you installed the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in in the correct location (make sure you follow the Camera Raw installation instructions to the letter). Also, make sure that you don't have more than one version of the plug-in running.

The overwhelming majority of problems with running ACR are caused by these two issues.

Fedka, Give me a hint regarding the correct location, I've got it currently sitting on the desktop, I think this may be the problem.
The only other plug in is Digital Photo Professional that came with the camera software, I get the thumbnails fine with DPP, just that I paid a fortune for CS3 and I want the thing to work correctly.

From the Read-Me file:

Manual installation on Mac or Windows®:

Windows®:
1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your
desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.

Mac:
1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open the Finder.
3. Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user’s home folder).
4. Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats.
5. Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure
you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.

Fedka The Convict is a true Champion, I cannot thank you enough. The raw file was missing from the Plug-in\CS3\file formats, like you said read the installation correctly which made me look through the program files.
I'll be tooo happy to shout you a beer any time you come downunder, Thanks Mate

Good deal. I'm upgrading to the 40D soon and found this thread while reading up on the 40D. Sure enough, my CS3 needed the exact same upgrade, but I would have never known that without finding this thread in the archives.

I would have gotten the 40D, shot in RAW, and been more confused than anything. Now that the CS3 update is done which took just a few minutes, I will save a lot of time troubleshooting later on. And it's all because I found this thread.

Thanks to all, and I can't stress enough how great the people are on here.

Update your RAW converter, follow the instructions carefully. Then restart bridge and clear the cache.

You have CS3, not CS2, right?
