Challenge #122 - Handicrafts

Folks, in the past, I've not been very successful in drawing good numbers of photos. I hope this new subject appeals to lots of you.

Handicraft, also known as craftwork or simply craft, is a type of work where useful and decorative devices are made completely by hand or using only simple tools. Usually the term is applied to traditional means of making goods. The individual artisanship of the items is a paramount criterion. Items made by mass production or machines are not handicrafts.

Please note: I will take exception to the reference "simple tools" above. I will consider the use of any power tools that the average individual might use today. Tools that can be bought at Home Depot, for example. Many handicrafters today use such tools.

I will consider photos of handcrafted items, individuals working their craft, stores selling craft items, museums displaying, etc, etc.

Finishing Touches

Title: Finishing Touches
Camera: Canon S3IS

This is a wood carving from Ghana, West Africa. These are my hands (although I had nothing to do with making the figurine).

I begain this challenge by stating: "Folks, in the past, I've not been very successful in drawing good numbers of photos."

Well, my record is still the same. Thanks to quarters and Edd S, I have enough entries to make a choice!

Both entries showed small examples of "handicraft" and both are in the hand carving genre. And two different continents are represented.

Talented: Quarters. A nice representation of a sort of folk art. I didn't know that antler burrs were carved. A picture of good clarity.

Finishing Touches: Edd S. Very nice wood carving. Thanks for your disclaimer:) And I know that you're not going to touch that finish with 100 grit sandpaper!

I feel that these entries are a toss-up. In naming the winner here, I've considered that I need to make a choice that goes beyond the pictures themselves. I though of the term "gene pool". Here is my contribution to the diversity of the challenge pool.

The winner and first place is: "Talented" by quarters. Challenge #123 is yours to define.

Second place: "Finishing Touches" by Edd S. Looking at that carving I wonder if it was African art that inspired Henry Moore.

Thanks very much to you guys!

Now, I'm going to take a break and sit back and see what happens.
