I am looking for a lens to replace the 18-55 lens that I had to get with my 20D body. I was looking at the 24-85mm f/3.5 - 4.5 USM. Is there a more comparable lens that is HIGH quality that anyone would recommend?

I bought the 20 D without a lens and made the first priority a 24 -70 L. It took a little getting used to due to it's size but I'd do the same thing again.

That would be IDEAL, but something a little more in my price range. Around $400 is doable.....

Well, if you search around here you'll find a lot of recommendations for the Tamron 28-75/2.8. I've been extremely pleased with mine ... it's a fabulous lens for the price ($350 ish).

I am going to get the Tamron 28-70 as well just after Christmas (also to replace the 18-55)

I think that is a great choice and everyone I have talked to loves the lens.

Your subject line and text don't match. Replacing a 18-55mm lens with a 24-85mm lens is like replacing an apple with an orange. Surely, you can do it, but the true apple replacement would be the 17-40/f4 lens. 24mm is not wide enough to cover the wide end of a "typical" allround lens like the 18-55.

Right, but I'm not trying to match it, just replace the lens with something else. Matching focal length is not a concern.

I would suggest saving for something like the 24-70mm L. What I did w/ my Rebel was to use the kit lens, practice, learn, and save till I got a really good lens like the 24-70mm L. Sure, I was impatient but it pays off in the end because I just upgraded to the 20D and now I have a much better camera and decent glass to go with it. Now I think I'm set for a while because I didn't settle for lesser lenses in the meantime.

Just my experience and my 2 cents. Hope it goes well with you.

Dan
