I am looking for a lens to replace the 18-55 lens that I had to get with my 20D body. I was looking at the 24-85mm f/3.5 - 4.5 USM. Is there a more comparable lens that is HIGH quality that anyone would recommend?

It took a little getting used to due to it's size but I'd do the same thing again. Some pics here - http://pbase.com/sjh

I've been extremely pleased with mine ... it's a fabulous lens for the price ($350 ish). ~ Jay ~

Replacing a 18-55mm lens with a 24-85mm lens is like replacing an apple with an orange. Surely, you can do it, but the true apple replacement would be the 17-40/f4 lens. 24mm is not wide enough to cover the wide end of a "typical" allround lens like the 18-55.

What I did w/ my Rebel was to use the kit lens, practice, learn, and save till I got a really good lens like the 24-70mm L. Sure, I was impatient but it pays off in the end because I just upgraded to the 20D and now I have a much better camera and decent glass to go with it. Now I think I'm set for a while because I didn't settle for lesser lenses in the meantime.
