Which of the two are better to get? Which recycles faster, which is brighter, Which of the two is the better buy (I'm a student! :))

get a second hand 550 (in good condition) if you can, it does everything better i think.... i think from memory the 430 can't master other slaves while the the 550 can.. could be wrong though. I have a 580 and a 550 and the basically do the same job for me - no difference other than appearance.

I would go for the 550EX if you can. Works well and I would have gone for this if I didn't get a good deal on my 430EX.

I'm pretty sure that the 550ex doesn't adjust for the 1.6 crop from your 30D whereas the 430EX does. You will probably loose a fair bit of the extra light output as a result...

Just found the link to my comparison. Do bear in mind this test was bnot 100% strict but in controllable conditions. It gave me a better understanding of how well each work with colours and ETTL.

I have a 550EX and a 430EX. Not a whole lot of difference except the 550EX does act as a master to the 430EX. The impression I had was that the 550EX was a lot heavier - it's not - and a lot smaller - again, it's not. The 550EX does have a bit more power.

Any preference to which would be better to use for off camera lighting? I would assume the 550 because it has slightly more power.
