 Thanks. I did see those. They were on the very first page when I did a search.
But when I mouse-hovered over the icon, it said 'half tone brushes' so I didn't even click on it.

  I also learned that I need to go to masking school. I'm in the help section of PS, and there is too much that is going over my head (external link).

I bet if I would learn to use masks, it would make life easier, huh?

Tutorial pt 1

Create a new document (I always create my documents with a transparent background). Then I used the paint bucket to make it black.

IMAGE NOT FOUND

create a new layer and open up your galaxy brushes.
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

Change the color to whatever color you want your galaxies to be and brush them on the screen. I had my brushes at 2500
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

create a new layer and change your brushes to the astral brush
IMAGE NOT FOUND

then I chose a size (not 2500) for my butterfly and the base color I wanted it)
IMAGE NOT FOUND

Then I made 3 more layers, and put the butterfly in the same place with 3 other colors
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

Then I clicked on each butterfly layer and added a layer mask.
IMAGE NOT FOUND

changed my brushes back to the default and selected a 65 soft edge brush and started at the top layer, panted black over anything of that color I didn't want (to mask it). Then I moved on to the next layer down and did the same thing.
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

see 2nd part for final results...

Part 2 Tutorial

as you can see...by masking parts of each layer with the soft black, I end up with a multicolored butterfly (make sure you are working on the MASK when you paint). It wasn't quite bright enough, so I added a hue/saturation layer and boosted the sat.

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

Then I "Merged down" all the butterfly layers so the butterfly was one layer, the galaxy was one layer and the background was one layer. Making sure I was on the butterfly layer, I selected the butterfly and copied/pasted it so that there were two.
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

Then I switched to the "move" tool and moved it over to the right more and then flipped it.
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

then I flattened it, used a Nik color contrast filter and saved
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png' | Redirected to error image by ZENFOLIO PROTECTED

and result

I use masks for everything. Wu taught me about them...but I use them on my templates (if a photo doesn't work "just right" under a frame, I mask it)....I use them for everything.

Black masks and white unmasks (or fixes mistakes in black masks) also, grey does a partial mask.

We took Cara and Amikah to Marian's school for her end of the year service project. She had to give an oral report on the breeds.
It was interesting to say the least.

The report or the critters or the kids?

you know, I thought about that (I'm one that is very bothered by baiting)....

What, you mean there is no baiting what so ever in the PIT shots? Whoa, I was sssssssssoooooooooo mistaken, my sincere apologies.;)

I think I just realized why I don't know much about masking.
In Elements it wasn't necessary to learn it (I can't remember why... I just never did)
and Scott Kelby doesn't talk about it AT ALL in his Cs2 book. How weird is that?! I just tried to look it up, and it's NOT IN THERE.
And this is my favorite Cs2 book.

you're welcome. And very weird that he doesn't talk about it in that book. I have his CS3 book but like I said, I learned to mask from Wu and it's been invaluable (I had a mask option from the download "hidden tools to photoshop elements").
