Try ISO f/10 hold shutter open for 1-3 seconds for a burst or longer if there are several bursts you want to get. Thats just a start but thats where I usually start. Oops no tripod hmmm long exposures wont cut it. Try a shutter speed around the same as the focal length 100mm + 1/125 f/4 and an ISO that absorbs enough light to expose the burst. Click when it is at it's maximum spread.

for fireworks, I shot this whole gallery (I think) on F11, iso 100

edit and I used a tripod because several of these shots are over 5seconds long but the best shots are 1-3 like Zane said :)
