Uh, try the 85 1.2 L. You can get coffee waiting for it to focus. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic lens, but speed is not its thing.

 That is seriously funny. I guess that is why the main use of the lens is portrait...or so I have seen. No need for great focusing speed there.

Permagrin wrote in post #5636770 (external link)
yeah...the 400 f5.6 and the 300 2.8 (of ours are hyper fast at acquiring focus)

most of our others are average-fast focusers

the 85 1.2, the macros, the tamron 28-300 (of our lenses, past and present) are SUPER SLOW focusers.

I would naturally assume that the longer telephotos or zooms would focus quickly, but never would have thought that there was such a large gap in the amount of focus time.

Yep. I was laughing about the irony of that, too.

The hospital where I work is about two miles northeast of Universal Studios and the smoke from the fire was blowing west, so I didn't smell it when I was up on the roof. But the first several miles of my route home is to the west and I got to drive right through that huge smoke cloud. That stuff positively REEKED! I've never smelled a fire that smelled that strong and bad. What the heck was burning there?!? I was wondering what kind of chemicals were blowing around in the air.

I hate driving through the smoke of what ever is burning...even if it were trees. That smoke from the fire here was the worst I smelled in awhile. Wonder how long it will take em to figure out what the cause of the fire was. Was it in the theme park or the actual movie lots?

Hmmm....a movie isn't a bad idea. I'm bored outta my mind here at home. Want to do something but can't settle on anything. Did the yard work yesterday and shampooed the dining room carpet and cleaned the couches this morning....nothing to do now. :|

According to the CNN link that Zane posted it's both. There was some kind of explosion in the movie studio and it spread to the theme park. But, on another forum, someone mentioned that a spokesman being interviewed on the local news said the theme park would be opening as usual. I don't see how that can be true, even if the theme park isn't burning...

The local ABC news here just said it's contained to the video vault, a huge building on the studio complex.

That's kinda scary to think about, though. There are a lot of old movie reels in there! The loss could be a lot worse than just monetary value.

News here said that it's the King Kong studio... Waiting for the main story to come up.

I think there would be a hazard of inhaling all the stuff lingering in the air for a few hours after the fire is out. On top of that...if they don't open the entire park because a portion is burned, they better be discounting the tickets since it would not be the entire experience of the park.

But I am a HUGE Chronicles of Narnia fan. I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I've read those books. All 7 of them. In fact, I wore a set out, and had to get a new one.

I never even heard of Chronicles of Narnia until the movie(s) came out. And I've still not seen them or read the books.

That would totally suck if the old movies were lost.....hope they had fireproof rooms or something.

Ah, now they're saying the film archives are safe. The videos that are burning are replaceable...

That would never happen. At Disneyland, big sections of the parks are usually closed at any given time for construction and refurbishment. They've even closed all of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland on a few occasions for complete overhauls. They never discount the ticket price because of closures. Why would Universal be any different?
