Hey all,
Rented this lens for a charity golf tournament I'll be shooting next week. It didnt come with a manual, so I have no where else to turn but here.

How do I modify the push/pull resistance? The ring that supposedly controls it (righty tighty, lefty loosey - i think) spins freely and doesnt affect the resistance at all. Am I supposed to be doing something else on top of just turning the ring?

Oh, and another quick question - I'm guessing that IS Mode1 = vertical/horizontal stabilization and Mode2 = vertical stabilization only, right?

Thanks~

hold the focus ring steady(smaller black rubber band) and turn the one before marked lock/unlock to your right that will set the lens

and your right on the 'is' modes

enjoy

That tension ring would appear to be broken, then.

Yes, IS modes as described, though mode 2 is more correctly a "one axis correction" (for panning, typically).

Thanks will try isolating the ring tonight..

One last question about this lens (i promise!) - do people have issues fitting the hood on properly? I had thought that ziplens had sent me the wrong hood but after a quick check on bh it is indeed the one bundled with the lens.

Beginning to think that I shouldve just rented that 1.4x or 2x for the 70-200 f/2.8 instead of the 100-400.. but damn them, they had a 20% off sale and I've always wanted to try this bad boy!

With most of the bayonet hoods, I first turn them a bit the opposite (ccw from the front) direction until they slip over the bayonet rails, and then turn them "normally" to anchor.

The hood should work just fine... Being a rental it may have just gotten banged up a little or something. As long as it works though. ;)

Like double negative said, it could be that your tension ring is broken. It should firm up as you hold the black rubber of the focus ring and twist the tension ring to the right.

I know I said I had asked my last question, but yeah.. here's some more ;P

Should I be worried about all the dust inside the lens contaminating my body? My rental has quite a bit of dust inside.. any tips on getting the dust out of the lens? I'm guessing a few shots from my rocket blower afterwards over my sensor should do the trick in removing any dust in my body, but would like to see if theres anything I can do to proactively reduce dust since I'll be out in the wild (golf course) w/o much time to rocket dust away.

When you go from 400 to 100, where does all the air go? I'm hoping not into the body.. right? Is this is the reason why this lens isnt weather sealed? In order to let the air escape?

I wouldn't worry about the dust. As long as the rear element is clean, go for it.

There's much conjecture about the "dust trombone" but it amounts to urban legend, depending on who you ask. ;)

There are vents just like with any other lens that changes length when it zooms. All lenses that change length move air in and out of the lens, even weatherproof ones.

Air will not really go back through the body as that would be a path of most resistance, it will go out the vents on the lens. Some are at the front and others are around the switches. The 100-400 seemed to have it around the switches as that is where you could hear the air going out.

I never really had any dust issues with my 100-400 and I used it on the beach and along dirt roads a few times.

Please make sure you tell Ziplens about the broken ring - I've reserved that lens for July!

Got home and held the focus ring while turning the tension ring and it worked!

Looked at the hood again and they shipped me the EW-83F, the hood for the 24-70 :(
