I am working with someone making the transition from film to digital. He says he has $2000 to $3000 and is ok for bag, tripod, etc.

He is middle-aged and interested in landscapes and casual, serious--amateur shooting. So what kind of body and lens combo would you suggest?

I'm thinking:

40D - $1100
70-200 f4L - $1100
17-85 - $515

Total $2715

Any other ideas or possible combinations you would recommend?

Nic

5D kit with the 24-105IS. Somewhere around $2800

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I agree that a 5D with 24-105L is a great start (I have this) for landscape, throw in a Canon 50 f/1.8, should put him right around $2900-3000. Otherwise, a 40D with a Canon 10-22 ($600ish), Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 ($450ish) (or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, a bit cheaper) and the 70-200f/4L non-IS ($650ish) would also cost just south of $3000. Both kits would be fun, quality combinations. It's fun spending other people's money :-)
