I planned on getting a G9 but now that I have searched some, I think I like the S5 better as far as looks and the 12x zoom.

How does the S5 compare to the G9?
I'm stepping down from a DSLR so I figured the S5 would feel better to me...

I was about to buy the Canon S5 IS when I then realized that the newer upgrade to it should be coming out any week now. So, I'll wait. As for the Canon G9, I'm no pro, so all I can say about it is that its a fine point and shoot camera which is probably considered one of the best in that categary, but I personally prefer the S5 because its capablility to go from shooting still shots to taking movies also.

And, the audio on the S5 is rated as the very best, since its in stereo. So, I would highly suggest that you hold off a bit for the newer upgrade to come out soon....

Unless I can hear a date that they're coming out for sure I'm not gonna wait....I been seeing post saying "Its coming" but it hasn't yet!?!?

The G9 will shoot video as well but it is in mono unlike the Stereo of the S5.
I'm just wondering what I'm missing when I go throught the comparison on Canon's site..... The G9 and the S5 seem to have basically the same stuff. Only thing I can see is the sensor/megapixels are different.

We've been hearing since March that it was about to hit the shelves. Until Canon actually makes a formal announcement, I won't begin to speculate on a date it'll be available. Even if they announced it tomorrow, you wouldn't, based on past performances, see it for another month.

Buy now and take pictures, or buy later and miss shots.

Well I've got my G5 and it works fine so I might wait a little bit.... I just sent an email to Cannon to see if they can tell me a close release date. I'm sure the answer will be filled with jelly beans.....

Just talked to Canon Tech support and the guy said there is no release date on an S6 that he knows of and he also said that usually they (Tech dept.) know about a month in advance of any new press release for a product.....And once there is a press release there is a month to two month lag before the product is in the stores.

I'm not waiting for fairytales and pixie dust.... :)

For the record, unless he was a very close friend and was absolutely certain you'd never breathe a word to a soul, that's about what I'd expect to hear. Last guy who pre-announced a product well before it was ready was Adam Osborne. And the company went under because everyone stopped buying the stuff that was shipping while they waited (and waited, and waited, and . . .) for the promised miracle machine. You'll hear a month before it hits the shelves, and that's about it.
