I just got my 40D back from Canon (focus problem) but it now makes a very faint 'rattling' noise when I tip the camera from side to side (yeah, I know, don't do that and the noise will go away ;)) and I'm not sure if the noise was there before it went to Canon.

Noise is like the battery door catch is loose (it's not) and the camera seems to work just fine :) so I was hoping all you 40D owners could give your camera a gentle 'shake' and let me know ;)

That’s probably the flash hinges rattling.
Put your hand over the flash and tilt the camera, it should go away.
Could be the orientation sensor inside the camera too..
One way or another, nothing to worry about.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Mine has a small "rattle" sound. I assume it is the orientation sensor.

The 20D manual mentions it at the bottom of page 101.
The 30D has it on page 111. For some reason they left it out of the 40D manual:

If the rattle was not there before you sent it in, you need to let Canon know right away. It may just be the sensor, and it may be nothing, but if something goes haywire in a couple months, you are better served being on record with them about it, especially if you just left the warranty period when things go bad.

take off the lens and put the body cap on.
Try to rattle it.
also, pop up the flash and hold it rigidly while rattling the camera.

I tried to write my signature, but my pen ran out and I put a big scratch on my monitor

The rattling noise is a known issue in 40D and you can find it documented in the troubleshooting guide as I report here. I also worried about that when I bought the camera but then I gave a look and I found it's fine :)

That was it - popped the flash up and no more 'rattle' :D

Thanks, greatly appreciated

Sometimes it's better to ask and find that it's no big worry, rather than letting little things like that bother you. :)

Similarly, both my XT and nephew's XTi had/have the same flash cover linkage rattle, so it's not just confined to the XXD platform. I think it's just an inexpensively designed and implemented part with tolerances driven by trying to maintain low production costs.
