When a photographer and a model get together for a shoot, who usually pays who? I see models offering TFP/TFCD shoots, so that tells me that they usually charge to modeling for you? That being the case, what would be in it for me as a photographer?

I just had my first glamour shoot, with a model from Model Mayhem who was new to modeling. I took the shots, and provided her with a cd of the images.
What if she has friends who contact me saying they want to get into modeling and want to do a TFP/TFCD shoot. I wouldn't mind having the shots for my portfolio, but that will eventually be full. Then what? Do I charge models to take their shots for them, or are they going to charge me to model.

As I understand it, TFCD is for mutual benefit when both parties want the photos and nobody wants to or needs to pay. You want they practice and the portfolio, and they want the portfolio too. Everybody wins.

Once you're past that stage, if you don't need the photos, or the practice, why would you pay them to take their picture? Just because you shot their friend(s) for TFCD does not mean you are obliged to shoot them under the same terms and conditions. If they don't want to pay you for your time then politely turn them down.

If, down the road, you need a model, then you are "the customer" and you will need to pay for their time, unless you can convince them to work for a TFCD deal. If the model comes to you, asking for shots for his/her portfolio then they are "the customer" and should pay you for your time and expertise - unless you decide for some reason that another TFCD type deal suits you.

I don't see what the problem is. It's really your choice. The problem with dealing with agencies, rather than aspiring models, is that they will want a cut from somebody, but for private "models" I'd say the charges are open to negotiation and you have every right to turn down a job if you don't like the terms.

That makes sense. Thanks for the reply, tdodd.
