I have been putting them in sealed plastic bags along with a packet or two of dessicant that came out of a vitamin bottle.

Are there any better ideas out there?

A lot of people in this part of the world (Singapore) use dry cabinets / dry boxes to combat the humidity:

A sealed bag with dessicant will be fine unless you're in a very humid country

I would venture to say unless your in some extreme high humidity (MI not being one) you probably have nothing to worry about. I leave mine in my bag as well or in a drawer.

PS: Don't eat the silicate bags (inside joke about the warning labels)

+1 for bag, but I tend not to leave the bag open. In saying that, I've just glanced over at my bag and it's been open all night :S

I have a few aluminium cases with padding, large ones (~30 cm long x 22 cm deep x 65 cm wide - opens on this side), which were used in the past for transporting tape back-ups for off-site storage in case of disaster recovery :). I store the lenses in there that I don't carry in any of my bags currently.

Kind regards, Wim

Just in the camera bag... I see no reason to store them in a very dry place unless you live in a particularly humid area.

Nah, you see, in case of emergency this is the stuff you need to save first :).

My cases come with a handle each on the long side and on the short side, so I can always carry both, no problem, and they are within easy reach too, all the time :D.

Kind regards, Wim ;)

My lens + body in bag, extra lens go into my cupboard in the cardboard boxes, although might not be the best idea.

Dessicants are ingenious. I have plenty where I come from (the pharmacy) :)

I store my nifty fifty (only extra lens at the moment) on the shelf next to my camera with the strap carelessly wrapped around the lens so that when I grab the camera in a hurry it causes the lens to fall on the tile floor. I don't necessarily recommend that solution though.
