For those who shoot airshows with a 400mm or larger.. I assume most dont handhold as these lenses are heavy. Do you use a monopod? Do you put a head on it? or just put the lens on the monopod and tilt as needed?

A few use one for statics interestingly, but they find that it just gets in the way when the planes are going up/down compared to things like cars where they stay relatively level. Airliners.net

Agree with the rest, tripod or mono just seem to get in the way, and you'll be lucky to get enough space as well Aviation Law - If your wings are travelling faster than your fuselage, it better be a helicopter.

Note the tripod mount is facing upward. It can also be removed. "All those who believe in psychokinesis, raise my right hand!" Steven Wright

Now don't tell me the kid was just holding the 2nd body for the picture...and I, too, handhold my 400 and 200-500 for air shows and birds in flight, etc. You just have to remember to put your arms down now and then.
