Football tonight first time with prime

This was my first time with my new canon 300 f4 L lense i found it very strange with a prime lense any tips will be welcome thanks.by the way canon 40D.

im used to moving in and out to follow the action i found myself moving the fouces ring and putting everything out of fouces just as i was ready to shoot and when the players came to close but as i say im still learning

You are not alone. When I rented the 300 f2.8 last summer, I kept reaching for a zoom ring that wasn't there
