Do you guys simply mount the Better Beamer unit on the flash shoe of your cameras, or do you use some kind of bracket further out over the lens barrel?

It makes more sense to mount the flash a little higher, especially if you're using a very long lens, to reduce the "red eye" effect of having the flash too close to the lens but it's not as noticeable during the day. Thanks, Leo - what kinds of flash brackets are you using for tele- and supertelephotos? Dr. Mark Polis 1DsIII | 7D

Be really cautious of burning your flash. I had my 580 EXII for less then a week when I came very close to trashing it. You can see images in a short tutorial I put together here: www.mountainnature.com/photography/techniques/flash/betterbeamer.asp Have fun with it. Ward Perfect!!! Thanks, Ward. Great article and photos. Man, that fresnel almost did your flash in for good. Appreciate the warning on your page. Dr. Mark Polis 1DsIII | 7D

I was recently in Ethiopia photographing colobus monkeys high up in trees. There was no shot without the beamer. They're inexpensive but are magic in the right situation. Ward
