Do you guys simply mount the Better Beamer unit on the flash shoe of your cameras, or do you use some kind of bracket further out over the lens barrel?

Yes. :D

You can do either. It makes more sense to mount the flash a little higher, especially if you're using a very long lens, to reduce the "red eye" effect of having the flash too close to the lens but it's not as noticeable during the day.

Thanks, Leo - what kinds of flash brackets are you using for tele- and supertelephotos?

Thanks - I have a Sidekick for the lens/camera.

I was asking what bracket do you recommend for the flash / Better Beamer as opposed to the camera's flash shoe (to avoid retinal reflection).

There is a flash bracket made specially for the Wimberly sidekick that helps to move the flash off-camera.

Be really cautious of burning your flash. I had my 580 EXII for less then a week when I came very close to trashing it. You can see images in a short tutorial I put together here:

Have fun with it.

Perfect!!! Thanks, Ward. Great article and photos. Man, that fresnel almost did your flash in for good. Appreciate the warning on your page.

Thanks again. Great leads there. :)

No worries. It was an important lesson

Here's a link to another thread where PacAce created a sun shield for his beamer.

LOL  I was just doing a search for that thread to post here.

b.d.bop, the Wimberley brackets you can use with your Sidekick is shown here:

http://tripodhead.com …et-telephoto-brackets.cfm (external link)

Either the F-1 or the F-6 will work with the Sidekick.

No problem. I was recently in Ethiopia photographing colobus monkeys high up in trees. There was no shot without the beamer. They're inexpensive but are magic in the right situation.

I'll try to post some of the monkey shots when I get back to my home computer.
