No seriously, a big thanks to Canon Australia - its good to know they stand behind their products.

Long story short, 40D about 3 months old and 24-105L about 1 month old, and have never been all that happy with exposure or sharpness so took the plunge and took the camera + lens back to Canon, along with a written description of what I thought was 'not right' along with some test images on a CD.

The service sheets came back with (40D) - adjustments performed to Auto focus and Auto exposure. Pixel compensation performed, cleaned and tested all functions. As for the 20-105L - Best focusing performed, cleaned and tested all functions.

All up, 7 (working) days and no charge

The camera is now a pleasure to use, lens is tack sharp and exposure is (maybe) about +1/6EV which is not such a bad thing ;)

I know someone will come up with that for around $3,000 (AU) for camera + lens you should expect it to work 'perfectly' straight out of the box but for the minimal fuss in sending it back for service & checking - well worth it :D :D

Did you go direct to canon or via the retailer?

I dropped in personally, as I drive past every afternoon on my way home from work

Straight back to Canon - I always prefer to go direct rather, than through a middleman as it tends to save time, and confusion

Haven't done any test shots yet as the weather here at the moment (after weeks and weeks of rain) is almost perfect and I tend to do most of my 'test' shots when the weather is lousy ;)

no, same thing happened to me, just got a rocket blower and blew the mirror and underneath the pentaprism, all gone...try it first. then if it really bothers you send it in.

Hmmmmm This brings up a good question. Seeing how the camera is now almost "new" does this mean he needs to produce a duck shot? I think so.
:-) :-) :-) hjs

Glad to hear a good story about Canon customer service. hjs

I had 2 dead pixels and a few 'hot' ones - I guess Canon just mapped them out
