Nice captures but I am wondering about the shutter speeds. 1/25????? The motion blur on the batting shoots is very distracting. You should think about bumping your iso.

Also, fill your viewfinder with the player. Your 100-400 could have gotten way closer I bet. Don't be afraid to cut off the top of the bat on portraits. Mom's like faces, not bats or foreground.

I got the bid for a league last year to shoot action, team, & individuals of the league of about 75 teams from t-ball up to the big guys and let me tell you i've gotten hit by the ball a more than ah andfull of time when sitting closer. I thin kyour positioning behind first base is ok that's about where i position myself to give u engouh time to protect your equipment if a foul ball comes towards you. I got a lot of shots like yours and all i did was just crop them tighter.
But yes your shutter needs to go higher at least 300 especially with all that available light.
Just crop it in photoshop :)

Thanks Joey... I'll play a little more with the shutter speeds during the next game. To be honest, the lighting was horrible... very overcast and it was around 6:30pm. I did what I could, but I will take everything under advisement for the next time.

Unfortunately our league doesn't allow anyone on the field, so I'm stuck. I usually just poke my head and camera around the fence post and at times the umpire still frowns at me. :)

That time of day you will probably need to go to at least ISO 1600. Your shutter speed needs to be at least 1/800 or 1/1000
to get good clean captures. Here's one I took at 7:15pm. ISO 1600 , 1/640th at f/5 , and still got motion blur in the bat.

And that just seems so ridiculous at the age level you're shooting.....

Thanks again for the feedback... its a shame that they don't let people from behind the fences, but I can understand. During soccer season, some eager parents were caught roaming the field with their point and shoots trying to take pictures... LOL...

Remember u do want some blur though. In my opinion if it's completley frozen it doesn't give it that sense of action. That blur in the ball and bat shows some motion and action in the shot. But there is a fine line between the blur you're looking for and too much blur. I think the blur in steels photo is fine because u can still see the bat and it's motion, whereas in your photos (luis) the bat is almost completely lost it's shape.

You changed camera bodies?
It looks to me like you need a faster lens. Are you handholding this rig or using a monopod? The pod would really help.

Much better..but see what I do is take pictures like u did the firs ttime to get more in the frame..then crop it in photoshop..just gives u more of a chance to get the ball in the photo.
