I have ruled it to the grip now as I have been using the only the camera without the grip since then and it hasn't had any problems. The only reason I haven't bought another Opteka grip is because I'm nearly 100% positive I'm going to buy a 40d in a few days.

Everyday use: 7D2, 1.4x v3 Canon TC (sometimes the 2x v2 Canon TC), Canon 500mm f4 L IS USM; 6D, 24-105L

I have the Opteka grip and have had no problems at all. Just shy of 3 years, stays on the camera all the time. The shutter button does have a different feel to it, but once you get used to it you don't even think about it.

I bought an Opteka grip for my XT a couple months ago. I love the change in how the camera feels and handles but i am haveing one problem with it....

Sometimes if the grip buttons are turned on (by the switch on the back of the grip) my wheel wont work in changing the apeture value. well it will change but only go down, no matter what way i roll the wheel. i have to turn the camera or grip off then it works ok for a little while.

I've heard of this happening brfore with the Opteka. The number of complaints with the Canon grip are miniscule compared to problems encountered with the Opteka or Targus grips. Personally I wouldn't put anything but a Canon grip on my cameras.

Trust me, the same thing, once in a while happens with Canon grips too!
Anyway, I liked Canon BG-E3 on my Rebel XT.
It was well worth the money I paid for it..

The same thing happened with mine... not really a big deal to me. I also noticed that the grip has to be attached TIGHT or you risk losing power when you turn the camera sideways.

The Opteka is crap. Don't waste your money on it. There are a variety of problems that develop with the Opteka. With mine, the control wheel on the vertical grip stopped working. I used it for the extra battery power until it finally caused the camera to lock completely.

The Canon is well worth the extra $40-50 it'll cost you, if you buy one used.

There are some bad ones, but certainly not worth the stereotype you just gave it. Canon ones develop problems too, like the periodic one that seems to "weld" itself to your body and you cannot get the screw loosened to take the grip off. And you cannot compare a new Opteka to a new Canon, apples to apples, the price difference is about $70-80.

Pretty broad statement. I know individuals that have the canon grip complaining about problems. I have had the opteka for 1.5 years with no issues.
