I am new to lighting but I am inspired by the Strobist.

I am trying to put together the best, most flexible lighting rig for all occasions. I'm thinking "reasonably portable", not "fixed studio".

I have: 1DsIII, 5D, a selection of L glass, Manfrotto tripod & heads.

Budget is: "Money no object". If I can't afford it, I'll wait and save.

So, my thinking is:
1 x Elinchrom Skyport transmitter
2 x Universal receivers
2 x Canon 580EXII
2 x translucent umbrellas
2 x white umbrellas
2 x Manfrotto Nano stands
2 x Lite Tite umbrella swivels
Coloured Gels (the subject of a different thread)

Will all this work together?

Have I made any obvious errors or omissions?

Or am I being stupid in some other way? :-)

It all looks good to me. If money is no object you could drop some pocket wizards in there instead of the skyports. You could get a softbox or and reflective umbrella too.

I was looking at skyport simply because it is small and neat, whilst the pocket wizard looks big and cumbersome.

(Andrew goes off to do some more reading...)

Ah! It seems that the skyport doesn't bring remote control of the flash power with the universal receiver. (It does with the RX, but that is only for their big studio flash)

Scratch skyports off the list and replace with three pocket wizard trancievers.

Yes. I'm figuring on two flashes and a couple of brolly options to start with, and adding more (snoots, soft boxes, more strobes) as I get to use it and have a little more experience with which to guide my decisions. For now, I'm trying to make the difficult first choices without buying stuff that I regret later.

Why shell out for a 580EX2 when something like an old SB24 or Vivitar will work the same with skyports?

Skyport has one advantage over PW: The ability to trigger 4 groups. PW offers something like that in the Multimax, not the "regular" PW.

If you get a Sekonic L-358 meter (missing on your list) you can get a module that will allow you to trigger PW though, not skyports. (Easily remedied by using an extra Skyport transmitter)
