Hi,

New to photography (hobby for about 1.5 years). I purchased a 40D recently and shot this on a friend's roof. 10-22mm used on a tripod. Photomatix used.

It's pretty cool, but I think the horizon need not be so slanted, might be better placed using the Rule of Thirds, and the monster-sized building in the foreground shouldn't be placed so close to the edge as it leads the eye out of the image. Cheers, Tony

I like the composition even if the main subject is somewhat central. The buildings on the right margin are nice anchors which support the rule of repeating objects. I also like the convergence of the shore line.

Things I feel that could be changed.... Too soft. Under exposed but not enough to toss.

PS: What is Photomatix?

It's a good one, i like the choice of Horizon placement.
Needs leveling and the uprights are converging with the tallest buildings.
I Like the colour contrast between the city and the blue and the sky makes the city look like it goes on forever.
Where in the world is Chambers St ?

Chambers St is in New York City. If you look in the distance, you can see the Empire State Building. I've added two more shots. 1st is same setup as initial shot but obviously later at night. 2nd shot is looking East into NYC. If you look carefully, you can see the Brooklyn Bridge. Weird though when compressed at Imageshack, image looks much crappier than it should.

Nice shots but watch your horizon lines. Nothing detracts from an image as quickly as a crooked horizon.

Actually, it's very close to the World Trade Center site. Riverside Terrace park, end of Chambers st.

I have been off the forums lately as I have been using my new toys...but to your pics...that is actually very close to my friend's home. I love that area, great dining experiences, etc.

Dear paulnyc,

First of all, welcome to the POTN.

The HDR treatment has given you a nice range of tonality with the histogram filled pretty much from one end to the other, although it's a little too dark in the shadows for my taste. That may well match the mood that you wanted, so enough said on that.

The horizon is tilted, and that can be corrected in PS. The verticals are converging quite noticeably and that can also be corrected using the perspective correction features of the crop tool. More importantly, keeping the camera perfectly level avoids both problems. The question is, how does one keep the horizon off-center in the final image unless he tilts the camera up or down. One answer is to use a wider angle lens and crop extensively. A less wasteful method is to crop to a different aspect ratio.

Keep up the good work - you're doing great!
