It is distracting to me also, having to look past so much blur to see the real photo. That being said, when taking photos for yourself, it is important what you think not what I think.
Getting the exposure correct will greatly improve the images. Try shooting manual and exposing for the pitcher. The camera in AV mode and pattern metering mode will have a hard time exposing him correctly with all the stuff in the forground and background. Remember, he is only a very small portion of that image, Spot metering would help, but exposing it manually is really the way to go. If that does not work, you could have them reposition the field 110 degrees to the right.........
