Shot some Track & Field yesterday, I have not done this sport much, but what do you think?

Also getting used to the weight difference between my 70-200 f/4 L compared to my new 70-200 f/2.8 L lens.

Any suggestions?

good captures, sharp and good timing, here's something to keep in mind. Both #1 & #2 would be better if we could isolate the background more and create a little bokeh. Since you shot at 70mm if you could have moved back a little and changed the zoom to 200mm you would have reduced the depth of field from about 4 to 8 feet at 70mm to 2 -3 foot at 200mm. So sometimes you need to zoom with your feet to use your lens to your advantage. You can learn more here http://www.canon.com …om/ef_70~200_28l_usm.html (external link)

so using a longer focal length with a wide open apeture will give me better depth of field
to seperate the background from subject?

yes, I don't know how far away you actually were from the subjects but if you look at the tables in the link you can see the difference. Note that the tables lengths are in meters. (D - distance to subject, ND - near distance focus, FD far distance focus) The overall look will also be influenced by the the distance between the subject and the background for example in number 2 the underneath of the stands which is a distraction. Hope this helps. Next meet run a couple of controlled tests and then compare the shots .

number 2 I was as far back on my feet as I could was up against a chain link fence, but maybe I will zoom the lens more next time.

Been looking at some of the track photos on your website and was curious where do you stand to get the shots like you did for the hurdles?
