Has anyone had any close calls with possible thieves while shooting alone?

Just wondering if anyone has had any close calls to having their equipment stolen, or even possibly being mugged, while they were shooting alone, or in a remote shooting location?

I know how easy it is to get so "involved" or "focused" on your subject/what you are doing, that it's easy to lose track of your surroundings, and other things that are going on around you.

I guess the only time that I felt something wasn't "right" was a few years ago, while I was photographing a sunset in Waikiki. I'd set up my tripod on a section of the beach away from most tourists, and as the sun was going down, got some very nice photos.

Just as I was packing up my gear, I noticed a couple of rather large men making their way toward me. As they got closer, they split up, but still both continued to head in my direction. I quickly gathered up my gear before putting it all away, and headed for a crowd of obvious tourists.

I then made my way back to my hotel. Nothing actually happened, but it did get my heart racing a bit.

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)

Nothing with the urban-type hoodlums, but almost stepped on a five-foot water moccasin sunning himself one early morning by a river.

Does that count?!?!

No threat to personal safety, but I recently had my camera bag stolen from my car while I stopped to take a photo. It was my own fault - I'd left the passenger window down and in the 5 mins that I was across the road, someone walked past and helped themselves to my bag (which was sitting on the passenger seat). Had a lens and some filters in there, but luckily I had my camera with me so it wasn't a total loss.

There have been times where I've been out late at night and have felt a bit vulnerable, but no actual threat.
