Think about how to use the registration of setups under the C1-C3 settings. They are really useful.

Yes, I have a lot to play with, before I can even contemplate customising my own settings, just yet. This is my first forray into the world of SLRs. A quick question though, when you save a shot in RAW, do you save it as a JPEG as well, or just RAW??

Hurrah!!!!
I've finally joined the club and splashed out on a 40D with a 17-85 lens with it...

Are there any hidden pearls of wisdom I need to know about this??

1. You can up the ISA to 3200 - hidden feture - read the manual and try it. It really works well, but you do need to reduce noise levels in PhotoShop or something. It allows for some interesting options.
2. Locate the LiveView focus capability of the 40D. Works great when detailed focus is required. With it enabled, you can use the SET button and use it immediately. Great for fine tuning if depth of field is shallow.

Hi,

A few hidden tricks...

1. Read the manual.

2. Buy the Magic Lantern or similar 40D user guide and study it.

3. Buy a copy of "Understanding Exposure" and read it, learn from it.

Now you're all set. Have fun.

p.s. I shoot RAW most of the time and archive practically all of those files. These are like your negatives or slides, if you shot film.

Depending upon what I'm doing with them, I'll generate JPEGs or TIFFS or whatever from the RAW files. Some I save, some I don't. If I've done a ton of post-processing work on a final image for some reason, I'm not likely to throw it away no matter what type of conversion file it is.

Oh, and one more tip... backup your files.

you can use the small joystick to choose the AF point, and press the AF menu will be choose all. I think 400D doesnt have it (the custom setting is in the manual). Very comfy compare to have to chose one by one. You might already knew this hehe.. good luck with ur new toys

The 400D has something similar, with the arrow keys.

The Blank Screen On Power Up Sucks

Ianfp wrote in post #5507165 (external link)
One useful thing - if you press the info button twice when in any shooting mode, you get full current setting details displayed on the monitor. It's a lot easier than reading from the top LCD display under certain conditions.

But the fact that you have to keep pressing INFO to make it do that is a bad thing, not a good thing.

you can change this in the menu settings so that you only push it once for all the info to pop up

,,,

Anyone know anything anywhere anymore?

The camera sucks if there is a loose nut behind the viewfinder.

I had the same problem. Sent the camera in and they said they couldn't figure out what was wrong.

Don't be surprised if some of your pics are soft, you don't achieve a 6.5 frame burst and your flash is under exposing your images. Search here first before posting the 40D sucks like a hoover.
Remember even some Hoovers sucked at first too, oh yeah, forgot, there supposed to. So much for that analogy :-)
