SD card to Compact Flash adapter

Is anyone using SD card to Compact Flash adapter in your camera?

I am thinking of buying an extra card in case of big event, but most of the time.. I won't be needing it, so I was thinking of getting a SD card to CF card adapter and buy the SD card instead of the CF card.
That way I can use it on my P&S camera and other compatible devices.

So, the question is.. how well does it perform? (if it is compatible)

Thank you.

I just saw where a friend of mine has this, and I've wondered the very same thing.

My son in law uses the SD-to-CF adapter to use the Eye Fi wireless unit (SD package) in his Nikon dSLR (CF).

They work but I find it noticeably slower (no technical measurements, just observations), so if you're not shooting high speed bursts then you might find it ok for your needs.

I have a couple. Like Wilt said, they let me use an EyeFi card in my cameras, and make my spare SD cards available as additional storage for my DSLRs, but I hope never to need them for other than the EyeFi.

Jon, how about opening up a thread about the Eye Fi and your experiences with the wireless capability in your Canon?

I did - At least someone asked about it a bit ago and I've talked a fair amount about it on that thread. But normally I'm not shooting anywhere I have an infrastructure wireless network set up, which it requires. Ad hoc would be much more useful as then I could just connect straight to my laptop; as it is I'd need to take an access point along as well. They've just announced two new models, but I don't think the requirement for an infrastructure network has been removed. And it still only does JPEGs.

So, at least it works.. just not ideally..

Hmm.. I guess I will have to debate it bit more. (Time for more brain spasm..)

Thank you so much for the inputs. :)

My apologies if my comment is off topic. But how about this?

I saw it at Costco online for $200:
With the Wolverine
® 80 GB MVP, you can transfer photos, video, audio and data files directly from memory cards over and over again. This travel‑friendly battery operated device is ideal for any application, both personal and professional, to store, view photos, watch movies or listen to music on the laser sharp built‑in 6.35 cm (2.5‑in.) colour LCD or hooked up to a TV or projector.

Word of caution I bought a similar product (Taiwanese 3rd party) last year and it died on the very first week of my 7 week vacation. It's battery operated so you're at the mercy of the battery.

Im useing a Micro SD to SD on my P&S. it works fine. As stated above I think it will work OK as long as you dont fill the buffer.

I had a 1 gig Micro SD for my cell phone. My new phone dosent use any add on memory so I put in in my P&S.

That's a totally different item. The SD-CF adapters we're discussing are CF Type II sized holders for an SD card, like this (external link). You use them in your camera's CF slot like you would a regular CF storage card. In the case of the EyeFi, they use WiFi to send photos to your nearby computer. You've pointed out a "digital wallet", used to dump your cards when they're full.

That's why I put a disclaimer that I may be off-topic.

sorry I misunderstood. I thought the poster was asking an alternative way to suck up his files from the CF card. His way was to an SD, your way is to EyeFi it to a nearby PC. My way was to a "digital wallet". But aren't we all doing the same thing? Moving the files from the camera to another media? IMHO

My bad.

Exactly.

The whole idea of adapter came about, when I decide to pull a trigger on 16GB (or more) flash card.
It just sounded better than buying multiple 4GB or 8GB cards or combination of bunch different types of flash cards.
However, one down side is.. I don't think I will need such a big storage card for my normal daily activities.. meaning it will collect dusts until a big event comes. I also have a P&S camera that uses SD card and it also could use more storage. Plus with 16GB, I can take more and longer crappy video clips with my P&S. ;)

So here I am.. trying to make a sense into my brain.. adapter sounds mighty good.. but I hate to end up with 16GB of total nightmare. :)

We're all good. :)

If it wasn't for my situation, that device would be a handy addition.

No - he wants to use SD cards in his camera which only has a CF slot via an adapter that holds an SD card inside a CF card, like the one I linked to. That's all the EyeFi card has to do with things; it's an SD card that can be used in one of these adapters to give relatively inexpensive WiFi capabilities to your EOS Digital camera.
