Oh man, so I've been eyeing primes again, but I have too many lenses. Currently have 10-22, 17-40, and 70-200 zooms, 50/1.4 and 100/macro primes, with a 17-55 on the way out of curiosity (I know I've been scared about the dust and IS issues, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly suprised).

Anyhow, I shoot everything from landscapes to portaits to sports at all times of day - light or dark. That said, the 17-40 is probably my favorite lens as far as IQ and color. However, I've been toying with the idea of selling it to pick upa 35L. I'd keep the superb IQ and color and gain several stops of light. I'd also still be able to take landscapes with my 10-22.

What do you guys think? Am I crazy? Samples of my photos can be seen at my website.

Oh yeah, 24L also is possible.

With a 17-55 on the way, I wouldn't think your 17-40 will see much use anymore. In the past month I picked up a 24L and a 35L, and they are really amazing. I absolutely love using them.... sharp, fast, shallow DOF, really awesome. :)

So I'd say go for it. :)

^ What he said. ;)

I would agree, with a 17-55 on the way you might as well give the primes a go. But proceed with caution - sharp, bright primes are highly addictive.

What if did not have the 17-55 on the way?! Still go for it, or would he loose too much FL? Just a question...

Best regards

Well, if you were going to pick one prime, the 35L is a great choice.
Do it...and enjoy!

Thanks for the confirmation. My gut tells me go for it, and the 17-55 may not even stay as I'm just giving it a run to see if I like it or not. I may (MAY) upgrade to a 1DMKIII (or even the 5D replacement) later, but if/when that happens I'll deal with my EF-S lenses at that time. For now, I guess I'm on the hunt for a buyer for my 17-40.

Really, now should it be 35L or 24L?

It really depends on your style and preference... I find 35mm to be a great "standard 50mm" and in general a very usable focal length on both a 1.6x and 1.3x crop. Some prefer the slightly wider 24mm, at least on a 1.6x. Both are great lenses.

Agreed! Tough choice, they're both sweet lenses. :)
