I have good studio strobes. I can't lug them off into the woods. I also have a 580EX and 580EX II and ST-E2. I am thinking about getting a couple of more 580EX II's. I have light stands. I have flash/umbrella brackets. I have a couple of umbrellas that are silver reflectors with black back. I'd like to get a couple of shoot through umbrellas. Anyone have a recommendation? TIA

If you've got a little extra cash to spend, Westcott makes some really nice small double-folds, that fold down tiny

580EX IIs is my exact lighting set-up and I use Photoflex's 45" Convertible Umbrella (external link).

I originally went for the 43" Wescott convertible collapsible (external link), but the first 2 I got the cover wouldnt stay on unless the umbrella was opened. The third had a bent shaft which didnt allow it to extend. So i just went with the longer (but better built IMO) Photoflex. Others have had great success with Westcott though, I may have just had a bad exp.

Hope this helps.

Here is some of my work with this setup

David Hobby speaks of the double fold (collapsible) in THIS (external link) article

Again hope this helps

You might want to go the "strobist" (external link) route. I find that the 580EX is not too reliable triggered by wireless ETTL "out in the woods". Inside it works fine, but outside I prefer to use either Skyports or a decent optical trigger with my Lumedynes.

Or invest in several PW's?

As for the umbrella, I use the Westcott's 43" "collapsible" with no issues. Nice thing about these collapsible is, of course, its compactness for convenient transportation and storage.

Thanks, Rene. I'm considering getting Radio-Poppers (website here (external link)) to enhance the communications of the ST-E2 outside with the 580EX II's as I realize that's a limitation otherwise. I have four Pocket Wizards in my kit and might get more so I can always go that route. I am, fortunately, in the position of being able to get whatever seems to work, so I can always change but I like the remote controllability of the ST-E2 system. Of course, all of this is moot if I don't get some models to work with ... what have you got in that department? :-)
