For mountain bike photography, I need at least one wireless flash for light. Currently I have a 580ex, but I am stuck between getting the ST-E2 or 420ex considering they are the same price.

What is the best to do?

Thanks!

Two flashes are better than one... If the 580 will trigger the 420, then go with that. If not, spend a little more for the 550. That way, you've got one flash on camera and a second one for fill off camera. The ST-E2 will do the job, but you've still only got one flash.

You need at least two units, one master and one slave.

For one master, pick one from this list:
580EX, 550EX, ST-E2.

For one slave, pick one from this list:
580EX, 550EX, 420EX.

If you check it, you'll find slightly more versatility in getting a second flash unit to go with a first flash unit.

I like to get both of my flashes off-camera, so I stick the ST-E2 on the camera, and spread out one 550EX to the left and one 420EX to the right. But that is just me.

Ok thanks :). This time I will most likely buy the 420, and I will purchase the ST-E2 in the new years. Thanks for the help.
