These were taken on April 19 at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. All with 40D, 100-400 L at 400mm, f/5.6, shutter as indicated. Oh, yeah. I used my trusty Buick Bird Blind.

They all seem technically "on". Aesthetically, I think the first is the best because of the pose and the plain background behind the bird. The third shot is a nice pose too, but the reeds behind his head take away from the shot a bit. Of course you do the best you can and hope the subject cooperates! :-) Nice shots though. I wish I could see one.

(ok..I had to look it up to make sure there wasn't really something called that..)

You are correct. I have many tack-sharp, well-exposed shots of birds' backs! Thanks for the comments.

Yep. It really works well on a reserve where there are good access roads.
