That will provide some weather sealing. :)

I have been wanting this lens for years and finally got one yesterday. Unfortunately it's been raining all day yesterday and today so I haven't had a chance to take some proper pictures. Here's one of the front of my car from a few feet away.

Hello everybody!
I have recently purchased this lens, but did not really have much time for taking pictures lately. However one thing that i have noticed is that i'm not satisfied with the sharpness of most images taken with this tokina. maybe my unit is somehow defective and i need to fix it. if it is, the problem is that i'm leaving US in 2 weeks, loosing an opportunity to fix it here. any help or suggestions if my lens has a sharpness issue would be highly appreciated. here is a sample image, 100% crop autocontrast applied in PS, shot at 11mm F10, 1/400 ISO-100. As you can see most details are destroyed. (leaves and grass looks like carpet texture, no details ) I'm pretty new to wide angle and wandering if this is degraded or normal IQ for an ultrawide.
In the end nothing close to the images i have seen in this topic.

Without seeing the entire photo and knowing exactly where your camera focused on.. it's impossible to even hazard a guess on whether the lens is faulty. The photo seems a bit underexposed in the crop area as well.

For a shot @ 11mm and 100% crop/pixel-peeping... that's not too bad. If you really need better detail of some pot-belly guy scarfing down an ice cream cone... then you should probably shoot with a more standard zoom or a telephoto.

AWESOME photo! and not much flare WITH the sun at edge of frame (said where flare is more noticeable). I keep switching back and fourth between the 1116 and 1022

Trying to decide between 11-16mm f/2.8 and 12-24mm f/4 ...

if you need the speed (ie indoor handheld shots), go with the tokina.

Hehehe, was that intentional?
I loved my 11-16, but I've always wondered about the 12-24 since 16mm was somewhat limiting, so I usually also brought my 28 and/or 50mm (or even 17-50), but in citytrips, I found myself wanting to switch between the 11-16 and a wide-normal lens (wider end of the 17-50) all the time. I'm guessing a bringing a 12-24 + 50mm would work well.
However, now I use a 17-40 on FF which works very well for me.

You can't knock this lens with uploading a 100% cropped image, as others have said thats pixel peeping. I've had this lens nearly a year and the level of detail is incredible.

I also rarley use the lens in AF mode and use the DOF scale to allow me to obtain maximum front to back sharpness. I set my aperture to F/11 and refer to some printed off tables that a carry around with me and set the distance to suite to focal length and always get top notch results.

Here is a link that i use and many others may also use and opted to use the 'feet'... http://www.dofmaster.com/doftable.html (external link)

Here is a recent image and when i look at this image at 100 full scale on my wide screen you can even make out individual buildings on the far hill...

Thank you. In all honesty I did remove a considerable amount of flare in Ps. A thin red green arc ran from near the top to near the bottom of the right side. There is no question that this is a flare prone lens. For me that's it's only fault, otherwise I like it quite a bit.

Don't forget chromatic aberrations as well! Easier fixed though

Today i went photoshooting to test tokina 11-16, and still not satisfied with the IQ. maybe its really a defective unit. please check this photos out and let me know if i need to contact tokina. maybe its just me. photos are unprocessed, shooting methods used were as suggested by Mannytkd. best sharpness i could get was around F8, at 2.8 pictures are literally horrible. It makes no sense to purchase an f2.8 capable lens and not being able to shoot at it...
here are my sharpest photos, full size and 100% cropps.
