Just my $.02 worth but I've been using the 4 channel version of the "Cactus Triggers" like you originally asked about for a few weeks now on my own Rebel XT and I just love them. I only have 2 receivers as this point so I use one receiver on my generic monolight, one on my Metz hotshoe flash and I trigger my third hot shoe flash with an optical sensor...works like a charm for those on a budget.
So far the only issue I've seen in regards to "brand" isn't about Canon cameras, XT or otherwise, but some of the Cactus Triggers don't work with the Canon 580EX flashes or 580 "clones" (such as the ProMaster 7500DX). Supposedly the "Cactus V2's" are supposed to fix that, but I don't know if it's true or not. Also you won't have ETTL with any of the wireless systems (that I know of at least), but you won't have that with a standard sync chord either. Also I've heard a few people gripe about mis-fires with these units but so far I've had no problems with that at all.
I do agree that whether you choose low end or high end, wireless is the way to go. As a musician who's spent over 20 years tripping over chords and cables (and watching others do the same), I wasn't even going to mess around with that with my photo gear. I've seen too many microphones and even a few amps knocked over because of someone's foot getting hung up on a cable (and ton's of cables totally destroyed for the same reason)...not going to do that with my camera gear!
Honestly, for what I payed for my Cactus triggers, I couldn't be happier with them. Very good value for the money in my book.
Peace,
Jim
