Hi All, I'm new to the forum. Sorry to start with a cry for help but here goes;)... any advice/help will be gratefully received.

I've had the 40D for a week now and downloaded the accompanying software - all appeared to load fine. All programs also run fine except "EOS Utility" and "Picture Style Editor".

I thought it might be a compatability problem with Vista (which is what I run) on my notebook as I tried loading on a friends XP notebook and all work fine.

I've tried everything I can think of.

I've unistalled and reinstalled the programs. I've downloaded updates from the Canon site on latest vista drivers. I've downloaded and run the latest Vista service pack from the MS update site. I've tried running them in another windows compatability mode. I've trolled the web and Canon sites F&Q all to no avail. No matter what I do when I try and start the program I simply get the message below :(:

If I was you, I’d first clean both the CD and the CD drive.

thanks, but I know the CD works (tried it on other PC). It all loads OK and sets up icon etc, no warnings, just doesnt run. I guess the CD drive is possible, but why a problem just on these two programs when all other ones loaded and work fine and everything else I run on the drive works fine too?

Fix the problem first, analyze it later.
At least, that's what I do..

I gave up trying to get Utility to work on my PC. I am also running Vista. Might try my XP laptop.

So Andy, do you get the same error message I get? e.g. "Stopped Working"... not really accurate in my case as it has never worked

No, I just get a small pop up box saying that the application could not start. I have not really invested much time into it as I don't have any real need to use Utility at the minute.

I will let you know how I get on this evening.

I can't really help you with your problem, but I will say I bought my 400D and my new Vista Toshiba laptop a little over a year ago. ALL of Canons software has worked perfectly from day one, and I always use the EOS Utility to download my piccies to my laptop.

As I said, it doesn't answer your problem, but I would eliminate the Vista compatibility issue.

Pete.

thanks Pete - hmmm I was beginning to suspect it was something else like a clash with some other program I have loaded... if it's that I think it's game over because I'm not going to re-build the PC for these programs.

That leads me to ask, how much should I care about these programs anyway?

That depends on what you want to do. If you want to download jpgs, you don't need EOS Utility. MS Camera and Scanner Wizard will do it with a camera-computer usb connection. If you want to download RAW files by usb, you do need EU. Or you can buy a card reader ($15-20) and d/l either jpg or RAWs from there.

If you want to do tethered shooting, you will need EU or another interface program - I know Breeze Systems has one.

If you want to add your name and/or copyright info to the Exif, I think it can be done through Zoombrowser as well as EU, but it's possible that ZB merely uses EU for this.

Picture Style Editor will let you modify a Picture Style. Some modification can be done in the camera by resetting the contrast, sharpness, hue and saturation parameters, but with PSE you can do much more, such as applying a custom curve or targeting specific colors. All this is primarily relevant if you shoot jpgs, somewhat so if you convert RAWs in DPP and entirely irrelevant if you convert RAWs in a third party converter.

^^ Reading that... does the camera have to be connected to the PC before you can start the application?

No, It will open but most of the functions, other than Preferences, will be greyed out.

Thanks for the detailed reply. This helps a lot. For the astro-work I intend to do with this camera I've ordered Images Plus and Camera Control, which supposedly controls the 40D and if I read right allows transfer of RAW files (which I do want to do)... if that fails I guess it's a card reader:rolleyes:

Hi robonrome,

One thing you could do, is install a slightly older version first, and once that works, upgrade to the next. I remember I had a similar problem once, and that solved it.

HTH, kind regards, Wim
