I use XP, but my daughter has an HP laptop with Vista. We installed the EOS Utility that accompanied my 40D camera. It works as expected.

I have a similar issue. EU opens on my Vista 64 bit machine, but even when I plug in the camera in a variety of ways (before EU starts, after, during plugin then power on camera, etc) EU never recognizes that the camera is installed. Vista seems to be happy with the camera - it installed camera drivers when I first plugged it in.

Hi robonrome,

One thing you could do, is install a slightly older version first, and once that works, upgrade to the next. I remember I had a similar problem once, and that solved it.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Thanks WIM, worth a try:D

Hi Damon - yeh I've come across quite a few posts of people having this issue - EOS wont open automatically when camera is attached. This is a bit different though, EOS wont open period.

cheers,

Rob

I had a "process" problem intially using EOS Utility. This is how I use it with XP and my XTI:

  1. Execute the EOS Utility
  2. With your camera OFF, connect the camera to the USB conx on your computer
  3. Then - and only THEN - turn on your camera
The EOS Utility will scan through the photos on your camera. A menu comes up on your camera (XTi - don't know about other models): you select ALL images or NEW images.

Zoom Browser laucnches automatically after your images are downloaded. You can change this and select the program you want launched in the preferences. You can select DPP, Photoshop, whatever.

Try running the application in Vista but run it in Windows XP compatibility mode.

Find the executable program in the c:\program files , right click on it, select compatability mode, select xp.

i got my 40d about a month ago. everything worked fine for about 2 weeks then EOS utility wold give me the same error as you are geting

i just said screw it and stopped using it but it bothered me. until one day a lot of other programs started to give me the same error.

I got fed up with vista and i did a fresh install of XP and now everything works much better.

If you don't need it for tethered shooting, it is so much simpler and faster to use a card reader that it just doesn't seem worth it to bust your brain trying to get EU to work.
